About Us

The ISNM - International School of New Media gGmbH - is a non-profit associate institute of the University of Lübeck and was founded in 2000. We have been actively supported by a large list of regional sponsors from politics, business, academia, foundations and private persons.

In 2012 we have started the liquidation of our institution and stopped all services and programs accordingly.

Mission

Our mission was to perform research and education in the area of New Media. We are living in an increasingly interconnected world of distributed computers (Ubiquitous Computing) with embedded electronics in daily life objects (Pervasive Computing) and an ever increasing complex environment (Ambient Intelligence). We do not sit in front of a computer, we act and interact with a world full of interactive smart objects (Internet of Things). Even the human itself gets more and more part of this complex structure, e.g. with heart implants, artificial retina systems, cochlea implants, etc. At the ISNM we investigate, how media production, processing, distribution and perception will change in this challenging new augmented reality.

Education

From 2002-2008 the ISNM launched the postgraduate study programme “Master of Science in Digital Media” conducted in English language. This multidisciplinary program combined lectures from science, business, culture, design and politics. About 65 students from around the world finished their studies in the Media Docks, the former campus of the ISNM. After six successful and also exciting years of studies and research in the area of digital media we decided to stop our Master of Science in Digital Media programme.

Additional educational programs have been offered in the framework of the E-Culture project.

We also conduct summer schools for international students in the baltic area in cooperation with north German universities (Rostock, Lübeck, Bremen).

We have also established new education programs for China in co-operation with partners in Hamburg and Shanghai and with support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research inside the project GBASH.

Research

The ISNM has actively performed a scientific research track with numerous media-centered research projects. In the last years, more than 2 Mio € third-party funding has been achieved, leading to more than 130 scientific publications. Some of our projects have received awards.
