This work outlines that librarians and patrons benefit from the implementation of RFID systems in libraries as it can simplify daily business processes and increase user satisfaction through advanced services. The first part of this research describes the current state-of-the-art of information technology systems in modern libraries and provides an outlook on future library systems. The analysis of shelf-related business processes shapes the second part of this work as basis for the development of an RFID-based mobile application to optimize and automate those processes. Finally, a mobile, RFID-based application has been developed to implement the optimization strategies obtained through the analysis of business processes.
